In response to the banning of TKAM, the Jim Crow Museum has responded with the following: "The staff of the Jim Crow Museum does not advocate the banning of To Kill a Mockingbird. We recommend that it be read by every American. Books like To Kill a Mockingbird, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and Uncle Tom's Cabin
are useful tools for deep discussions about race, race relations, and
racism. Books like these should not be banned because they use the
'N-word' or because they portray graphic depictions of racial bigotry.
As Abraham Lincoln noted, 'We cannot escape history,' and these books
are relatively accurate portrayals of sad periods in American history."
I think it alright because it shows us how we use to treat the different kind of race.

ReplyDeleteLiterature represents who we are at certain times in our life. Books that have derogatory (language that puts someone down) are uncomfortable to read, but they do serve a purpose. We cannot deny that we, in the United States, we very racist. If we do not look back at our history we cannot learn from it.

ReplyDeleteI think the books should have age ratings on the them. To kill a mocking bird tells about racists people and segregation. The other two books says the 'n- word' too much and might not be school appropriate. To kill a mockingbird is important because some don't know how they did the legal system back during racism and how it was hard to live in the great depression.

DeleteThe book should be banned because it has a lot of racism about black people. What if it was blacks calling people trailer trash and honkey and all that other racism terms they wouldn't be happy.
