Elizabethan Theater Experience:
In the late 16th and early 17th
centuries, the time period in which William Shakespeare was active in the theater, attending a play during the afternoon was a favorite leisure activity
for many members of London society in much the same way as going to movies and
plays is a popular form of entertainment today. A closer examination of the
theatre of Shakespeare’s time, however, will reveal many differences between
the Elizabethan theater and the movies and plays of today. Research what this theater experience was like and post your findings.
There were three different types of venues for Elizabethan plays: Inn-yards, Open air Amphitheatres and Playhouses. The Inn-yards were the original venues of plays and many were converted into Playhouses. e The Amphitheatres were generally used during the Summer months and then the Acting Troupes moved to the indoor playhouses during the Winter Season.

DeleteThe Globe theatre was built by Peter Smith. They started building in 1597 and it was finished by 1598, about 3,000 people went to the theatre .

DeleteThe audience would eat, drink and talk throughout the performance. Women in Shakespeare never performed and the female characters were often played by boys. Plays used very little scenery, instead using language to set the scene.
ReplyDeleteMost theaters were indoors. People with money would go to the theater because it cost money to get in. Woman would have to wear masks because they were not allowed to go in the theater because it was a disgrace.
ReplyDelete"To really understand Shakespeare" you need to see his plays live on stage and explore the theater experience during Shakespeare's lifetime a lot if people went to the theater and it was a lot of money.

Elizabethan theater was a booming business. Plays and theaters were just as popular as movies in theaters are today. They cost only one penny. Women had to wear a mask to go to the theater and there were no actresses. Men had to play the women in the plays.If people didn't like the performance, they would throw tomatoes at the actors and start a riot. (Jessica and Karissa)

DeleteIn the Elizabethan era's time at a theater women couldn't act or see the theater because they had no right to. Women use to put on mask's to go see in theater to not look like a women.

ReplyDeleteIn 1576 James Burbage build the theaters with his brother-in-law John Brayne and named it 'the theatre'. During the same year people will go watch it at the courtyard of inns
ReplyDeleteYou were not expected to be still and silent throughout the performance like you are today . The audience would eat , drink and talk throughout the performance . Plays were preformed in the afternoon . It was cheaper to pay for a ticket to listen outside .

ReplyDeleteThe cheap seats were directly in front of the stage, although people in this area stood. Rich people would want to have the most segregated and exclusive seats in the theater, away from the rowdy, poor people. - Michelle Salazar;D.... Hi!!:)

ReplyDeleteIn the Elizabethan era James Burbage had created the first ever theatre in London. The Globe was the first theatre created and it was very successful and the main performer a play writer was William Shakespear. Women had to wear masks and were not allowed to go on stage and act. They would usually use boys who have not gone through puberty to play the women's part.

The theater is 1,040 seat and women could not be performing on the stage so women had to wear a mask. If the performance was not good the audience would throw tomatoes at them

In Elizabethan theater there is only guys that play the parts in the plays. When the women go to the theater they have to wear a mask.

ReplyDeleteTheaters were open air and used natural light. And people would often eat drink and would talk throughout the play.
Many woman were not allowed to enter the theater .

DeleteIn the Elizabethan Era, acting was not considered a profession for women. Young boys would usually play the roll for them because they do not have facial hair and have a girly voice.
ReplyDeleteWomen were not concidered smart so they would be home and take care of their family. They also wouldn't be able get a job. Back then the ladies were not able to go to school.

Theater was not something that women could do because the soft type voice was not really needed. Usually small kids would be the ones to voices for the theater plays. Daniel kittinger
ReplyDeleteThere was a fire in The Globe theater in 1613. They had fired a cannon in one of the plays. They had rebuild it in 1614. They built the theaters like the Roman Coliseum but on a small scale.they could fit about 3000 people in one theater. ReplyDeleteThe rich people would get higher seats than the less wealthy people. There were some theaters that were outdoors and were in the middle of the night. The buildings were they did the play by or inside look like a average house.
