Wedding Customs
It is said that one of the gifts to England of the Elizabethan era is
Shakespeare. The Renaissance that began in Italy only made its way to
England during the Elizabethan era. Shakespeare was a huge example used
by many to demonstrate how the Renaissance came to be in England. It was said that 26 year old Anne Hathaway was impregnated by 18 year
old William Shakespeare before their marriage. To avoid scandals and
rumors, they were set to wed. Although William was three years below the age
of consent, this is not entirely impossible as he may already have been
treated as a working man due to financial problems that John faced. Research marriage traditions and post your findings.

ReplyDeleteIn Shakespearean Era it was legal for boys to marry at the age of 14 and the girls are allowed to marry at the age of 12. It was most likely that the women never got to choose who they married. All weddings were held at there nearest church and weddings were considered very religious. And the food had to be very exotic such as a peacock. And they always feasted after the wedding.

DeleteThe dowry was an Elizabethan Wedding custom which benefited the husband. A dowry was an amount of money, goods, and property that the bride would bring to the marriage. It was also referred to as her marriage portion. The law gave a husband full rights over his wife. She effectively became his property.

ReplyDelete"Weddings were arranged by both families who would benefit" women were supposed to marry into wealth. "The law gave the husband full rights over his wife" women had no rights, only the men had the right of the marriage between the man and the women.

ReplyDeleteIn Veneto, it is customary for the Italian couple getting married to walk to the wedding chapel together. The townsfolk place obstacles in the bride's path to see how she will react to domestic situations. If she picked up a broom, for example, she will keep a clean house. If they put a child in her way and she stopped to help him, she will be a good mother. In some regions, the bride and groom must cut a log in half before they reach the wedding site, using a double handled saw. This demonstrates their partnership in love and marriage.
