  3. For over two centuries the U.S. Coast Guard has safeguarded our Nation’s maritime interests in the heartland, in the ports, at sea, and around the globe. The Coast Guard protects the maritime economy and the environment, defends the nation’s maritime borders, and saves those in peril.

  4. They watch out for terrorist attacks or hostel forces trying to attack the United States. Also prevent illegal trades or goods, and making the shipping companies pay their taxes on goods they ship to the United States. They also go searching for boats that are stuck in a storm, and stop illegal immigrants from floating to the United States.

  7. The responsibility of the coast guard are to safe people from drowning in the ocean, people transporting drugs, also from the pirates that kidnapped people, and people killing extinct animals. The dangers of being a coast guard is drowning, being killed, and crash into something while in a storm. The type of people that go into coast guard are army, civilians, or people that do for volunteer work.

  8. A strong sense of tradition, an underdog mentality and a "make do with less" attitude are the hallmarks of the U.S. Coast Guard. Unique among U.S. armed forces, the Coast Guard is perpetually on active duty, chronically underfunded, entrusted with a vast array of responsibilities, but often overlooked. If you watched television coverage of the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, you may have seen Coast Guard helicopters hovering above a flooded New Orleans, plucking stranded storm victims from rooftops.

  10. "The Coast Guard is one of our nations' five military services. We exist to defend and preserve the United States. We protect the personal safety and security of our people; the marine transportation system and infrastructure; our natural and economic resources; and the territorial integrity of our nation–from both internal and external threats, natural and man-made. We protect these interests in U.S. ports and inland waterways, along the coasts, on international waters."
