Teens join gangs due to quite a number of reasons. This includes getting: excitement, recognition, friends, respect, acceptance, territory, protection, power over other people and a sense of belonging. Most teens never realise they are gang members, they just think they are in company of friends.
Gang members join a gang by either committing a crime or undergoing an initiation procedure wherein they are bitten by fellow gang members to test their courage and fighting ability. Some people call it fellowship of brotherhood.
These risk factors increase the odds that a young person will join a gang, but is not a guarantee as we see members joining from suburbs and seemingly stable family environments. The reasons why young people join gangs can vary from simple to more complex.
